Adopt A Cop
The Adopt a Cop Program was implemented in 1990 to encourage interaction between Burlington Township police officers and Burlington Township school students. It is a program designed for Second Grade students at the Bernice Young Elementary School. Its goal is to develop a positive relationship and create an open dialogue between the students and police. The officers strive to meet with children during school at least once a month. They participate in various school activities with students such as class holiday parties, “Read Across America” and “Jump for Heart”, as well as lead discussions about topics such as stranger awareness and bullying. At the conclusion of the school year, students are invited to tour the police department. They meet with other police personnel and township employees and enjoy a picnic lunch at the Green Acres Park. The program has grown from five classes in 1990, to include 21 classes in 2008
and 14 in 2009.
