Police Explorers

The Police Explorer Unit headed by Officer Kathrine Cacia [with the assistance of Officers Ronald Chiorello and Mark Levondosky] involves youths between the ages of 14 and 21 who are interested in a career in law enforcement.  The Explorer Program is a division of the Boy Scouts of America and its goal is to expose the explorer to the law enforcement profession find out what it is like to be a police officer.  The explorer is given the opportunity to experience, first hand, some of the daily tasks of police officers.  Since the program’s inception in 1983, over 300 explorers have gone on to fill positions as full time police officers around the country.  

The members meet on a bimonthly basis to discuss topics such as the Court System, Unarmed Self-Defense, Narcotics K-9, Radio Communications, Traffic/Crowd Control, U.S. Marshals, Basic Motor Vehicle Crash Investigations, Vehicle Extrications, Explosives K-9, New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Firearms Instruction, and Vehicle Pursuits.

Recently, the Explorers were able to view motor vehicle stops and participated in a mock vehicle extrication. They also took a field trip to the Mercer County Airport to understand the intricacies of airport security.
