Honor Guard Unit
The members of the Burlington Township Police
Department have always sought to represent the department in the most
professional and honorable manner possible. In pursuit of this end, the
department, throughout its history, has endeavored to maintain an Honor
Guard Unit consisting of officers who are proficient in military
bearing, discipline, and demonstration. Traditionally, several of the
unit’s officers have represented the department at memorial services,
parades, funeral processions, and graduation ceremonies. However, due
to numerous retirements and reassignments, this unit was recently
exhausted of officers and in need of fresh blood.
In 2007, thanks to the efforts of Sgt. Robert Ent,
the current Burlington Township Police Department Honor Guard Unit was
formed. Only two officers, P/O Chris Ent and P/O Floyd Hazzard, were
carried over from the previous unit’s membership. P/O James Sullivan,
P/O Matthew Christiansen, P/O James Conway, and P/O Jarrod Broadway were
selected as new additions to the unit, with P/O Jarrod Broadway becoming
the new Honor Guard Unit Drill Leader. Sgt. Ent secured funding for the
unit’s new blouse coats, leather gear, shoes, and other uniform
accessories that distinguish the unit from the remainder of the
department. Sgt. Ent also initiated a new training regimen that
required the officers to continuously hone their skills so that they may
represent the department with utmost poise at any function they may
attend.
In January of 2009, P/O James Sullivan was promoted
to Sergeant and officially assumed command of the unit, though P/O
Broadway is still the Drill Leader. Members of the unit continue to
train regularly and actively participate in ceremonies to include the
Burlington County Police Academy’s graduation ceremony, the Burlington
County Fallen Officers Memorial, funeral services, and various other
formal events. Recently, several members of the unit traveled to
Washington, DC to observe the National Police Honor Guard Competition
that takes place during National Police Week every year. The unit has
aspirations of competing in that prestigious competition next year as
well as performing opening ceremonies at local professional sporting
events.
